Oranje Voetbal Club’s BU-19 start the summer with a win at the Rady Children’s Hospital Charity Cup. With 11 returning players and seven new additions to the roster, the boys of Oranje bring home another champions cup for the small East County club. The Charity Cup was the first real games the newly re-invigorated team had played in, and they proved that the new combination was effective.

Goalkeeper Liam Gamble came up with save after save, allowing only four goals in the seven games played during the tournament. The boys of Oranje scored a total of 13 goals, including five goals during the championship game verses El Cajon Matrix. The team posted a 5-0-2 record for the weekend.

During the championship game, Justin Picou started the boys off with their first goal via a diving header into the back post. The fun didn’t stop there for Picou, as he netted a hat trick during the championship game. His flip-throw of 25-plus yards also kept his teammates and the contingency of Oranje parents thoroughly entertained.

Newcomers Hasael "Weasel" Noriega and defender-extraordinaire Preston Coffey each scored one goal to net the 5-0 win in the championship game.

Both teams played hard despite the 108 degree heat in the East County, plus the added heat coming off the turf field at Pershing Middle School. The heat was so bad that one of the Oranje players’ shoes melted and the sole separated from the leather foot. He played with the patched shoe until an extra pair was brought from home.

Coached and trained by Helix HS boys varsity coach Joaquin Huertero, the team looks forward to continued successes during the tournament season, as well as during the fall 2008 Presidio gaming league.
